Flame

By definition, a flame is a self-contained and focused combustion. It is a locus of energy that emits light and warmth and it is composed of a singular anatomy. Like a seed, its tear-drop shape is ensheathed within by delicately encircling, tiered layers, each with a unique energy dynamic, and each integral to the whole.

Used as a tool, a flame was one of man’s first discoveries, and continues to this day as a source of wonder and creation.

Through the flame, these sculptures come into being, are molecularly transfigured, aligned and attuned into resonating balanced compositions, which leap into life with a breath of the wind. Because the flame is elemental to my creative process, it is a clear choice as a theme for this studio show. Yet ‘flame’ also has deeper and universal meanings which have guided this choice of a theme which is also a meditation. And ‘flame’ carries a good messages for us at this time of year, and in this era.

I did an Internet search on ‘flame’ and found many wonderful and interesting links (Click HERE) Flame came up within many different contexts, and represented vigils/vigilance, passion, magic, spirit/spirituality, cleansing, healing, energizing, uplifting, inspiring, illuminating, enlightening, humanity, and awareness (Recent research on brain activity/consciousness at Stanford describes it as most akin to a flame.) Flame is not only used in reference to Art, Religion, Activism, and Spirituality, but also for Science (as in research & discovery- see flame awards) the world of Sports (the Olympic flame) culture, and almost any innovative line of inquiry and development pursued within a discipline. The “Keepers of the Flame” safeguard important and profound information, customs and traditions handed down by our ancestors, while “Igniters of the Flame” start new ones, or discover/invent visionary new paradigms often necessary for survival.

So the flame is a rich symbol upon which to focus. Especially as we pass through the darkness of the season and the uncertainty of these times on this planet. Let us safeguard the flame that is the essence of our life and humanity, our greater being. It is precious but fragile, yet from it springs our hopes, dreams, passions, and warmth. A single point of light which belies the oneness of all light, and reminds us that the true nature of our being is infinite.
